Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT’s) are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems, and licensed to diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders within the context of marriage, couples and family systems.
Marriage and Family Therapists are recognized as a "core" mental health profession, along with psychiatry, psychology, social work and psychiatric nursing.
MFT’s take a holistic perspective to health care; they are concerned with the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families. Research studies repeatedly demonstrate the effectiveness of marriage and family therapy in treating the full range of mental and emotional disorders and health problems. Adolescent drug abuse, depression, alcoholism, obesity and dementia in the elderly -as well as marital distress and conflict -are just some of the conditions marriage and family therapists effectively treat.

I work with individuals starting at age 14, to adults, couples, and families experiencing:
• Major life transitions (eg. recent job change, new baby, sudden loss, phase of life change, challenges in relationship etc.)
• Navigating anxiety, depression, and stress brought on by these changes.
• Overcoming limiting beliefs that are keeping you from seeing the possibility of a new way of life.

I serve residents of Jacksonville, FL as well as offering virtual services to the rest of the state. Clients must be within the state of Florida during sessions. I cannot serve clients outside the state as I only hold licensure for Florida.
-
No, you do not have to be married or in a relationship to receive my services. Being a Marriage and Family Therapist doesn’t inform who I serve exclusively, but how I serve. I take a systemic approach to help all clients assess their relationship to their presenting problem.

A number of benefits are available from participating in counseling. Therapists can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress management, body image issues, and creative blocks. Many people also find that counselors can be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and the hassles of daily life. Counselors can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from counseling depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn. Some of the benefits available from therapy include:
• Attaining a better understanding of yourself, your goals and values
• Developing skills for improving your relationships
• Finding resolution to the issues or concerns that led you to seek therapy
• Learning new ways to cope with stress and anxiety
• Managing anger, grief, depression, and other emotional pressures
• Improving communications and listening skills
• Changing old behavior patterns and developing new ones
• Discovering new ways to solve problems in your family or marriage
• Improving your self-esteem and boosting self-confidence

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. The typical length of treatment can range from 8-12 weeks (of consecutive sessions) but may vary. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs. Some sessions are therapist driven, providing suggestions to concerns. Other sessions allow for venting and reflection. These aspects can be discussed in more depth during our consultation.
All you need to do for successful treatment is to show up as yourself, with transparency and motivation to see change!
-
In almost every instance, therapy is absolutely confidential. Your therapist is required to maintain confidentiality about everything said in sessions between the two of you.
Safety
For your own safety and the safety of others, exceptions include suspicion of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence and abuse, National Security, homicide, and suicide.
HIPAA
Other disclosure of information to consider is when insurance is used. Through the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA there are federal laws and regulations protecting the privacy of your health information that very clearly and thoroughly define when your therapist is allowed to talk about you or your treatment outside of your sessions.
-
Your therapist cannot be a close friend or relative because that would create what's called a “dual relationship”, something that is unethical in therapy. Dual relationships occur when people are in two very different types of relationships at the same time.
